This covered Ipe deck looks up to an intricate tongue-and-groove ceiling. Built-in outdoor heaters warm up the space, along with a built-in grill with granite countertops. Truly deluxe—that’s how we describe this expansive backyard deck in Oakton.
IPE Floor
It all starts with an Ipe floor. We used wider planks and installed them in a chevron pattern to add some visual interest to the space. Ipe is one of our favorite deck materials. Three times harder than cedar, it’s one of the most flame-resistant woods on the market. In addition, Ipe decks are far less susceptible to decay and mold than decks crafted of other woods.
Railing, Lighting, & Ceiling Fans
Sturdy, square, paneled columns emerge from the traditional white railing around the deck to support the impressive tongue-and-groove ceiling. Built-in can lights and a series of ceiling fans were installed to make the deck a hospitable locale both day and night. Square, paneled beams mimic the columns and add support to the deck roof.
The Deck
The deck is accessed from the home through sets of sliding-glass doors. A series of venting picture windows provides the home with plenty of views of the deck and backyard property. A large staircase to the left splits into two sets of stairs leading down from the deck; one to the backyard and one to the side yard. Unfinished space below the deck acts as an open potting shed, with storage for yard and garden equipment.
Full Outdoor Kitchen
A full outdoor kitchen sits at the left side of the deck, next to the main seating area. A stainless steel grill is accompanied by a matching warming drawer as well as a full-size range hood that keeps the area from getting smoky or overheated when the grill is being used. We installed a granite countertop to make the kitchen even more functional and attractive.
Extensive Custom Landscaping
Extensive custom landscaping was another element of the exterior remodeling project at this Oakton home. A wide flagstone walkway leads from the backyard to the front of the house, with occasional curved seating walls along the way. Short hedges were planted close to the house, while tall shade trees were placed at the back of the property and in front of two windows at the front for privacy.
