We built stone retaining and seat walls around this flagstone patio, which features a custom fountain spa as its focal point. Custom fencing and lush landscaping surround the tranquil scene. This stunning space demonstrates what good design can achieve in a small footprint!
Stone Spa and Fountain
With a custom stone spa and fountain as its centerpiece, this Washington, D.C. backyard was transformed into a festive oasis—and a gorgeous setting for entertaining. The shape of the Pennsylvania flagstone patio and stone retaining and seat walls mirrors that of the spa, making smart use of the space and creating a circular area for table seating.
Multi-Level Patio
Despite the limited footprint of the yard, several zones were created within the multi-level patio to provide a number of options for seating, dining, lounging, enjoying the spa, and taking in the view. We used steps and borders to create subtle transitions from zone to zone while keeping an overall cohesiveness that makes the entire backyard a picture-perfect setting.
A Mediterranean Mood
The spa’s fountain is installed in a half-circle pediment beneath a decorative lion’s head bust. This “backsplash” behind the fountain brings a Mediterranean mood to the spa and acts as a visual centerpiece to the space. Every other element of the backyard seems to radiate from the fountain, which provides a memorable backdrop for family celebrations, parties with friends, and relaxing afternoons in the sun.
Landscaping Lushness
A custom wooden privacy fence in varying heights surrounds the backyard property. Wide beds full of plantings add to the lushness of the oasis-like scene, creating a true “getaway” experience at this urban Washington, D.C. home. Close, dense trees were placed right outside the back fence for additional privacy and shade.
