We built this covered wraparound Ipe deck with storage underneath, built right into the hillside. A finished tongue-and-groove ceiling below the deck complements the added brick base. At this Great Falls home, we created three expansive deck spaces for the family to enjoy.
Pennsylvania Flagstone Patio
The lower level is a Pennsylvania flagstone patio with a brick seat wall that reaches out into the grass. The ceiling above the patio, along with the one above the middle-level deck, is made up of finished tongue-and-groove panels and outfitted with perfectly-sized ceiling fans.
IPE Deck
The deck itself is crafted of Ipe, an exotic hardwood hailing from South America. Ipe decking is in high demand due to its beauty, insect-resistance, and renowned durability—it can last up to 25 years or more when properly maintained. Three times harder than cedar, Ipe is also known for being one of the most flame-resistant woods on the market. Ipe decks are far less susceptible to decay and mold than decks crafted of other woods.
Outdoor Kitchen
White columns and railings help accent the deck levels and complement the home’s color scheme. A bar and built-in grill were installed to make the mid-level deck an inviting place for entertaining, relaxing, celebrating, or just enjoying an al fresco family meal. We find that many of our Virginia remodeling clients use their outdoor kitchens more often with just their families than they do for parties with lots of guests. Grills built in to deck spaces help homeowners enjoy the outdoors on a more regular basis and can make ordinary meals special.
Under-Deck Storage Space
A brick base was added to the bottom of the home to add foundational support and visual interest. Sliding glass doors lead to the lower-level patio while French doors open to the mid-level deck. One special added feature of this project is the under-deck storage space we added. It’s built right into the hillside! This tucked-away spot allows the homeowners to keep their outdoor equipment and other accessories protected from inclement weather and conveniently hidden when guests are over.
